Yorkshire, Wonderful Historic Sites
South Yorkshire
South Yorkshire is a metropolitan region in-the Yorkshire and Humber area, and is made up of 4 metropolitan boroughs. Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham and the city of Sheffield.
Situated to-the east side of-the pennines and land locked, south Yorkshire buts against the borders of north and west Yorkshire. The riding of Yorkshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire. Elements of Sheffield also lie within the peak district national park.
Three major rivers cross the region and they are the Rother, Dearne and Don.
Like all of Yorkshire there's tons of intrigue, folklore and rich history attached to what was previously regarded as being a part of Yorkshire renowned for its large industry, in particular the steel foundrys of Sheffield and also coal mining.
Pre historical remains including a Mesolithic " home" - a group of rocks in the form of a hut foundation dating back-to 8000 BC, were uncovered at Deepcar in north Sheffield.
You can find loads of places to visit within south Yorkshire and these include Brodsworth hall and gardens. Elscar steam railway. Howden moors. Monk Bretton priory. RSPB old moor wetland center and Wentworth castle and gardens.to name but a few. Doncaster racecourse is furthermore worth a visit and-a bit of a flutter on-the gee gees if theres a meeting
on. Sheffield - Metal City
Throughout the 19th century Sheffield grew up about and acquired a reputation worldwide for producing steel. 2 of-the Sheffield steel industry innovations were crucible and stainless steel. Coal mining was also another important business. Now - a - days both long gone.
Anyone old enough (like me) to recall the pictures " The full-monty" and " Brassed off " nevertheless two of my all-time favourites will realize the battle the folk of west and South Yorkshire survived throughout the time of the closures, as well as the humor and pathos, not to mention true grit and determination to pick them-selves up and get on with life. Were nowt if not hardy buggers in Yorkshire.
The twenty-first century saw many changes following the lean times when these two leading sectors shut their doors for the last time.
Today Sheffield is completely redeveloped and is noted for its diverse culture, art, entertainment, shopping facilities, nightlife. Along with the continuous increase of its own economy.
Needless to say there are reminders of Sheffields once great industrial past, and Tourist attractions include the Abbeydale industrial hamlet. A unique 18th century industrial works boasting the only surviving, intact crucible furnace in the world.
If you have a bit of a desire on theres also the Sheffield brewery company, where you can take a visit of the functions and learn how cask ales are made before trying a decrease of real ale in the recently installed bar.
Just in case you believe Sheffield too industrial for your taste, you may always escape to-the beautiful lodging places available.
And, seemingly Sheffield has the greatest percentage of trees to people of any city-in Europe. Perhaps its time-to change the name from steel city to green city!!
In addition... Joe Cocker, the singer with-the voice comes from Sheffield too.
Sheffields Two Cathedrals
Saints Peter And Paul Cathedral - Chapel of England
The sight of the current cathedral has long been connected with worship and Religious use. The first Sheffield parish church was built within the 12th century. However this church was razed to-the earth in 1266 during the second barons war against Henry 111. Another parish church was completed in 1280 but was mostly destroyed and rebuilt in
1430. All through the following centurys additions and alterations were made such as the Shrewsbury chapel and the chapel of St Katherine.
The cathedral has 13 bells in complete, for change ringing. Thursday night is training night for those ringtones and of course the alarms are rung every Sunday before the support begins.
Two fascinating and striking attributes of Saints Philip and Pauls cathedral are the lantern tower and the screen of swords and bayonets in St Georges chapel.
Cathedral Church Of St Marie - Roman Catholic
This Cathedral Church appears in a somewhat less prominent position than saints Philip and Pauls, but a large spire alerts you to its existence.
During the catholic emancipation during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Catholics were permitted to worship more openly, and so Sheffields Catholic believers bought an old house and assembled a place of praise in the garden.
Doncaster
Doncaster or " Donny" as its known to locals, is created on a Roman fortress constructed in the 1st century AD at-a bridging point on the river Don.
In-the early twelfth century Doncaster became a possession of " The Kingdom of Scotland" within the treaty of Durham, and the transfer is believed never to have been formally reversed.
Well Ill go tfoot of rstairs (Yorkshire speak for Im truly surprised) And there was I convinced Donny was and, puddings as as Yorkshire parkin!!!
Doncaster became a busy town in the 12th century and was given recognition using a town charter.
Nowadays a few of the old buildings and area of the market stay. But Donny has kept pace with modern living boasting new buildings, an international airport, and also the education city university. The largest education expense of its kind in-the UK.
Brodsworth Hall and Gardens
Situated 5 kilometers north west of Doncaster. Brodsworth hall is just one of-the very most complete and almost unchanged Victorian country houses in Britain.
The final resident of the hall was Sylvia Grant-Dalton. Her late husband had fought a loosing battle for 5-7 years prior to his death against subsidence by coal mining and also a leaking roof.
When British Heritage took over-the hall in 1988 following Sylvias passing they decided to preserve the inside " as found" rather than replacing and rebuilding. This makes the hall unique in several ways because possessions that took over 130 years to gather still remain and contain grand pieces of furniture along with the humblest of household domestic items.
The Victorian gardens have been reconditioned, and the hall now boasts tea areas, a childrens play area, Illuminated night time garden tours, and for people only, educational garden tours conducted by the halls head gardener. As well as other attractions for example classic car activities and shows.
Additionally, there are group concerts on Sunday afternoons, featuring some of Yorkshires top brass bands. Should you love music, you haven't lived until you hear a correct Yorkshire brass band.it will blow your socks off. Yorkshire is recognized for the quality of its own brass musicians and I can assure you will not regret paying the entrance fee whenever you hear these men and women perform. On Brodsworth halls website it suggests you take a foldable chair and a picnic as well as you, for the concerts its a good bed and breakfast quantocks.
For those interested in the great. The hall is said to be haunted by a ginger cat, and former inhabitants. The village church " All Saints" which was constructed by Sylivias husbands family, is reported to be haunted by two elderly women wearing period clothing, who strategy the entrance to the church. Their footsteps can be noticed, but then quit abruptly when the ladies dissapear into thin air!!
